Ancient Greek silver coin (drachm) issued by Philip III Arrhidaios (323 - 317 BC)

 

Obverse: Bust of Herakles wearing a lion skin over his head.

 

Reverse: Zeus seated left on backless throne, one leg drawn back, eagle held out in right hand, left hand holding sceptre, serpent symbol in left field and A monogram below throne; Philip’s name in Greek written in right field.

 

Artist: Unknown die engraver at the mint of Lampsakos

 

Origin: The mint of Lampsakos in Asia Minor.

 

Materials and method: Struck in good quality silver from engraved dies.

 

Dimensions: 18 mm diameter.

 

Weight: 4.30 gm

 

Date of creation: Attributed to the years 323 - 317 BC

 

Condition: good Very Fine.

 

Stock no: C071

 

Comments: Philip III was the elder half brother of Alexander the Great.
