Material and method: Bamboo; hand carved

 

Origin: China

 

Maker: unsigned

 

Age: Probably first half of the 20th century

 

Dimensions: 16.5 x 13.5 cm

 

Condition: Excellent with a honey-coloured toning; a few fine shrinkage cracks as usual.

 

Provenance: From an Australian collection of Asian artefacts that was formed in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Comments: Brush pots were used for Chinese calligraphy to hold clean brushes upright and are one of the items from “the scholar’s table”, along with water droppers, ink stones, etc. They were made of jade, porcelain, wood and bamboo and often finely decorated.
