Finely carved wooden figure of an emaciated Immortal playing a flute and holding a begging bowl

 

Origin: Probably China

 

Materials and method: Hand carved hardwood.

 

Dimensions: 41 cm H.

 

Date of creation: Probably late 19th century/early 20th century.

 

Condition: Some splits in the wood resulting from the aging process; appears to be a small section missing from the end of his flute.

Other comments: The immortal depicted could be Han Xiangzi who is often depicted carrying a Chinese flute (dizi).
