North-west Persian mafrash side panel


Size: 120 x 65 cm


Age: last quarter of the 19th century or earlier


Materials and technique: wool warps with some a mix of ivory and brown wool; main panels in slit tapestry weave; minor bands in sumak (extra weft wrapping); extensive use of white cotton; the panel of white cotton is compacted and patinated; mysterious brocaded animals at each end of the cotton panel


Colours: all colours from natural dye sources; no signs of any colour weaknesses


Condition: excellent with a few very minor, well done repairs


References: for similar examples see Tanavoli, Shahsavan, plate 119 (of which he says: “without doubt a masterpiece”); Azadi, Mafrash, page 82 (dated to first half of 19th century – probably too early)
