Material and method: Sheep’s wool, colours from natural dye sources; slit tapestry weave.

Age: probably from the last quarter of the 19th century
Condition: Excellent; very minor repair to one corner.

Provenance: acquired in Damascus, Syria, more than 10 years ago.
Comments:
- The Shahsavan is the name given to a group of nomadic peoples living in North-west Persia.
- A mafrash is a bedding or storage bag used to carry felts and weavings for the tent. Several full mafrash would be loaded onto the back of each camel during the migration between summer and winter pastures.
- This piece could be used as a table mat, thrown over the back of a chair or pinned on the wall.
